Shad K's coming to Pop!

Shad is an MC from London, Ontario who just got nominated for the 2008 Polaris Prize. His last album, The Old Prince, got awesome reviews from both Okayplayer and RapReviews. 89/100 and 10/10 respectively. "As far as Okayplayer accolades, I'd place Shad somewhere in the Blu/Kweli continuum, a deft lyricist with Exxon-deep rhyme pattern reserves." He also got noticed on Pitchfork, where they posted this awesome video:

Shad's albums are critically acclaimed and rumored not to be as good as his live show. So don't miss him at Pop Montreal on October 3rd at Jupiter Room!

In May '68, Dominique Grange dropped everything: theatre, singing, her record deal, touring, her "career," to sing for the Revolution in worker-occupied factories, and the courtyard of the Sorbonne. A true muse of the movement, her songs have become incorporated into the counter-culture musical canon. Generations later, her song, "Les Nouveaux Partisans," is still a protest anthem. Grange's inspiration comes from social unrest, racism, poverty, inequality, prison, exile, emancipation and revolutionary utopia...

Forty years after May '68, France's President has vowed, amongst other things, to "turn the page" on what Grange and Jacques Tardi (her long-time companion) responded to in their publication "1968...2008: N'effacez pas nos traces!" (2008, Casterman/Institut des Métiers de la Musique), a collection of 15 songs accompanied by an exceptional selection of gouache drawings by Tardi.

Tardi is one of the most important French illustrators alive today. Best known for his series, "Adèle Blanc-Sec," he's also won critical acclaim for his series based on the First World War. His illustrations for Louis-Ferdinand Celine's "Voyage au bout de la nuit," are universally hailed as masterpieces. Tardi has also masterfully adapted works by Léo Malet (Nestor Burma), Daniel Pennac, and Jean Vautrin (Le Cri du peuple).

With the same gusto and conviction she's had since the beginning, 40 years after May '68, Grange remains "committed...for life." Tardi's brush, as well, continues to provoke and inspire hope today, as always, with the breathtaking images he's created to accompany these 15 songs. The images, which are projected live in concert, alternately blend frenetic energy, tenderness, lyricism and violence.

For Tardi, this visit marks the end of a decade-long absence from Quebec, and for Grange, her Pop Montreal appearance is a North American premiere!
