Hello! I’m Julie,. Based in Montreal, Canada, I’ve spent the last 15 years traveling the world for both pleasure and work, living in Europe, Asia, and North America. No matter where I went, I always had a pair of my hometown’s traditional shoes, Espadrilles, with me. These shoes reminded me of my roots and my family, offering comfort, ease, and a splash of color in my life.
Inspired by the compliments and curiosity these shoes garnered everywhere I went, I decided to share this joy with others by starting my own brand in 2024. Thus, Maru was born. The name “Maru” means desert sand in Sanskrit and also something beloved in Japanese, perfectly capturing the essence of our shoes.

At Maru, our mission is to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of traditional craftsmanship while embracing contemporary artistry. We are dedicated to creating handmade espadrilles that not only honor time-honored techniques but also showcase the innovative designs of contemporary artists. We collaborate with local Montreal artists for designs.

We value the beauty of handcrafted goods, support ethical production, and cherish the stories and skills passed down through generations. Through our commitment to quality, sustainability, and cultural preservation, we envision a future where tradition and modernity coexist seamlessly, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for diverse cultural heritages.
